VRFM9 FM Transmitter
The moment you’ve all been waiting for with bated breath has arrived. That’s right, VR3 has released the much-anticipated VRFM9 FM Transmitter. For the uninitiated, this transmitter is designed to transmit audio from a personal MP3 device or flash storage device to your car stereo’s FM radio. Past versions have included a USB port and an aux 3.5mm audio jack for your iPod or other music device. However, the VRFM9 has added a new feature: a Secure Digital slot. That’s right, you now have double the flash memory music storage playback options! You can get this at our webstore for roughly $55.

I have the low end model from Walmart but this version seems even better with more features at a great price. Believe me it DOES WORK (well). I have been listening to my own radio station on my commutes . I want to have multiple SD or USB memory with different playlists on them.

are there different versions of this? is the walmart one really a “low end” model? I’m contemplating buying this but I’m not sure… do you have to put the songs in a specific way on to the media? or does it support folders and stuff like that?
thanks!

I’m not sure what version Wal Mart is carrying, but I do know that there are cheaper (and less feature-rich) VR3 models, so it’s possible.
As far as alternatives to the VRFM9, you can check out our FM Transmitters category on our website.
Finally, the VRFM9 does not, to my knowledge, support directories, so you’ll probably have to copy your music to the drive/SD card in the order you want them to play in. It does have a random feature, however, so you can mix it up as well.

thanks for your further insight! the walmart one i saw did have the usb/sd + aux feature, but I’m not sure if I want to risk it. not being able to support directories is a real deal killer for me. I don’t want to have to reorganize my usb/sd from my regular use just to play it in this thing…
is it really that difficult to engineer a product that just works, and actually works well?
anyway i might try it out since i can return stuff at walmart, if i do i’ll report back w/my experiences. thanks again!

well I ended up buying this at walmart but I just couldn’t keep it. I mean it’s cool and all, but the navigation is really terrible. I mean sure I can put a 2gb stick in there but if I want to go from song 1 to song 523 that’s a lot of button presses.
if this thing had folder navigation it would totally be a keeper… and it’s still a great product! sound quality was excellent, but it’s just not what i need
thanks anyway for the info!

Good to know. Thanks for your feedback! We’ll keep our eyes open for a transmitter with folder capabilities.

After using the previous model for two years, I decided to buy one of these because it’s got a display, memory, volume, shuffle mode and automatically starts playing when the ignition is turned on. Everything I wished the first model would have done.
However I have not been very pleased with the newer model. I get a random “no media” on the display. Sometimes after the song plays it will not progress to the next song. Or takes 30 seconds. Or won’t start playing when the ignition is turned on. Sometimes the light on the jump drive is not lit up.
I thought perhaps it had something to do with shuffle mode but that seems not to be the case.
I tried different brands of jump drives. Still nothing.
I took the unit back to Wal-mart and told them I thought it was defective and exchanged it for another one. However this one seems to be worse!
My conclusion is the jump drives are not making full contact in the unit. When I used the same jump drives with the older version they worked just fine.
The unit seems to like SD cards (Digital camera storage cards). My guess is because they snap and lock into place they make a better connnection.
So far no problems with SD cards but the unit “cracked up” when it tried playing one particular song on the way to work. I don’t know why. When I mean “crack up”, I mean it sounded like a bunch of garbage. LIke the file was corrupted. Yet it played OK on a jump drive.
My conclusion if you purchase one of these, buy a bunch of SD cards instead of USB jump drives. Otherwise the features and better sound quality is better than the previous unit.

On second thought..
I tried a 2 GB SD card today. First time I inserted it, it said “ERROR”. So I pulled it out then plugged it again. It worked for awhile then it hung up again.
Since this is the second unit I’ve tried, I say this model has way too many bugs in it to be worth fooling with. Model number VRFM9
I’m thinking about taking it back and getting my money back and waiting for about a year and see if they have worked out all the bugs.
I still can’t say for sure what the problem is. It seems to be related to the size of the media and the amount of songs it’s trying to read from.
Their first model, the one that is black without a disply works great and I’ve been using it for two years with no problems.

Just my opinion. I’d love to hear from others that have this model and see how it works for them.

Do you guys know why VRFM9 wouldn’t play MP3 files in a 2Gig memory stick? I does play MP3s from a 512kb (even if they are in a subfolder). I tried a former simpler version of the VRFM using the 2Gig and it works just fine.
Thanks for any advice,
Louie

We have had problems with the Memorex drives in the past needing to be reformatted before they will work. If anyone is having problems getting their drive to be recognized, they should try reformatting.

Does anyone knows how to improve sound quality?
Can anybody make modification on device?

I have VRFM8BLN model. And I am happy the sound quality. The only thing I do not like is it does not remember the place of song that last time I played in USB flash. Each time, when car restarts, it will start playing the the first file of USB flash. Question is that VRFM9 has this feature that I want? I saw VRFM9 has the song memory. Does it memorize the last song only so each time, the car starts will play the beginning of last song or even play in the middle of last song. Can someone clarify for me?
Thanks,

Does anyone has the problem of 2gb USB stick with VRFM8? It works sometimes but not always. I observed it does not work if I restart the car.

I have been using the older VRFM black model with no probs for a while…but i NEED SHUFFLE/RANDOM! so i got the VRFM9 for $24 on ebay. item arrived and won’t play ANY USB drive. No media present it thinks. I think the problem is the USB contacts as one poster suggested…. it DOES play from SD cards though!
regardless, i’m sending the unit back…support at the company has been fine, they even sent me an RMA UPS label so i don’t have to pay for return shipping… will probably not update this forum with report when i get the new one; but i’m confident….
i just want these badboys to cost $5 each. just wait….
