USB to serial is Vista Compatible
We have recently recieved some calls from customers who are haveing problems getting the USB to serial, part number SW-1301, to work with Windows Vista. The lastest driver is sometimes required for it to install and work properly with Windows Vista. Here are some instructions on how to install the USB to serial driver on a Windows Vista operating system:
1 - Download the driver files for the USB to serial SW-1301
2 -Â Extract the files to a location that you recognize and will be able to find later.
3 - In the device manager (click start/Vista icon, Control Panel, Device Manger to access the device manger)Â right click on the USB - serial controller, which should have a yellow sign next to it, and click update driver software.
4 - A new window will pop up, click on “Browse my computer for driver software” and then click on the browse button. Locate and click on the folder that you extracted. Click ok and then next and windows should install the driver.Â
5 - Click finish and you should be set up and ready to use your serial device with Windows Vista. (If you still have problems make sure that you have the driver for your serial device installed correctly.)

Hey Guys,
I tried doing what you said so that i could install a usb to serial port converter but Windows wont let me change it.
Is there any way you can help me, or direct me to a converter that is Vista compatible.
Thanks
Duane

The Sewell USB to serial adapter seems to occupy its own com port as it opens it. This is the conclusion on a lot of tech blog boards.
Is there a fix for this? I’m running Vista and am using the Sewell driver for Vista. Also, I have selected named ports in both Device Manager and on my Nav programs. “Port not Available” or “Unable to Open Port” are the messages that I get.

Hi,
I tried installing the driver but I get a response telling me that windows has determined that the right driver is installed and does nothing.
I tried the “Have disk” option but I get a message telling me that the driver is not compatible and does not let me install it.
Help, please.

At the bottom of the Specifications tab, there is an updated USB to serial Vista driver We have it available as an installer or in the individual file format.
If you used an installer to load the drivers initially, simply run it again and it should uninstall the old version. Then install using the Vista drivers.
If you are using the add hardware wizard, download and extract the driver files, Run the hardware wizard and select the option that says “Don’t search, I will choose to install the drivers) Browse to the folder where you extracted the drivers.
Make sure that you are using the appropriate drivers for your version of Vista (32 vs 64 bit)

New Vista driver will not work on my HP Pavilion tx2115nr laptop. Downloaded the file, updated driver in device manager. Fault is–”This device cannot start. (Code 10). Device manager sees the Sewell converter, will reload the device and switch com port numbers as I move it to different usb ports on the laptop. Shows driver version of 3.0.0.0. Driver details show two drivers; ser2pl.sys, and serenum. sys. Windows update search says I have the current driver.
This Sewell adapter worked on this laptop before I installed the Vista service pack. It was incorrectly recognized as some sort of “pen point?” device. After disabling the pen point device I could use the Sewell. Never loaded any additional Prolific drivers at that time.
This adapter works on my older HP laptop running XP.
Any ideas on what to try next??
Thank You

Still no luck with Vista. When I tried to use the Vista driver it says that it is not designed for Vista. I have tried the latest version as of today and still nothing.
