USB 2 compatible with USB 1.1

USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 are backwards compatible with each other. They have the same interface, and many of the same specifications. The only problems that you will run into, when using a USB 2.0 device on a machine with USB 1, will be problems with speed. USB 2.0 is up to 40 times faster than USB 1. If you are using a USB 2.0 Hard Drive, Camera, CDROM, DVD, or any other high speed device, then you will probably want to upgrade your computer to USB 2.0. If you have a desktop, you can upgrade with USB 2.0 PCI card. If you have a laptop, then you will need to use a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.

Whenever working with USB 1.1 and 2.0, it’s important to remember that any USB 1.1 device in the middle will slow down the entire process to 1.1 speeds. So if you have USB 2.0 ports on your computer and a USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure, a USB 1.1 hub will cause everything to run at the slower speed (12 Mbps).
