The Cantankerous Debate
Well, Mark and I have been debating with each as to how the DVI to Component adapter works. After arguing for the last few weeks, we finally gave in and tried to find out. So grabbed one of these awesome cables from our stock, pulled out our trusty multi-meter, and found the pinout by using the Ohm function. It turns out that this cable works strictly with DVI-I. In fact, it doesn’t use a single digital line from the cable to make the connection. What does this say about the cable? Well, that it still is an awesome cable, but will only work with devices that output an analog signal. This also means that this cable will not work with HDMI ports(since they only send out a digital signal). What does this say about Mark? That he is one smart cookie. I will not display my theory out of pure embarrassment.

So, what the DVI to component does, is allow you to connect video cards that output TV signals, to component video inputs on a TV. It doesn’t work with most Home Theater DVI, because in TV applications it is a digital only signal (DVI-D)
Some projectors might be an exception however if the projector is designed to allow input from a computer over a DVI connection, it might support both digital and analog signals. (The projector manufacturer should know for sure)
